October 1st is here, and this month’s "Notes from June Sky" dives into the heartbeat of my series: the characters. When I look back at where we started in Book 1 compared to where we are heading in Book 5, it’s not just the plot that has changed—it’s the people living it.
Beyond the Profile
I’ve shared before how my "Story Bible" holds the foundation for my characters, but a character profile is just a snapshot in time. Growth, in my experience, is about the friction between who a character thinks they are and who they become under pressure.
How I Map Character Arcs
To ensure the growth feels earned rather than forced, I approach character development through three specific lenses:
The Shadow Trigger: Every character has a specific type of darkness they fear most. My process involves identifying that trigger early on and slowly increasing the pressure until they have no choice but to change their perspective to survive.
The "Cost of Growth" Audit: For every major lesson a character learns, I make sure there is a tangible price tag. If a character becomes stronger or more capable in the magic of Lunaria, I ask: What piece of their innocence or past did they have to sacrifice to get there?
The Mirror Reflection: I often look back at the earliest chapters of a series and place a current scene side-by-side with an old one. If the character would handle the situation exactly the same way, I know I haven’t pushed them hard enough. True growth means their past self would barely recognize their current choices.
The Beauty of the Long Game
Writing a seven-book saga like The Night Chronicles allows for a slow, agonizing, and beautiful evolution. It allows me to let characters make mistakes, fail, and slowly piece themselves back together over years of narrative time. Watching Liz and the rest of the cast evolve is both the most challenging and most rewarding part of being an author.
A Question for You
When you read a long series, what is the specific sign that tells you a character has truly grown? Is it a change in how they speak, how they fight, or how they choose to love? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
Stay dark,
June Sky
