For this week’s Character Chat, we are stepping away from the guardians to examine two figures who operate in the deepest shadows of the Nocturni monarchy: Michael and Warren.
The Dynamics of Power
In the rigid hierarchy of Nocturni society, Michael and Warren represent two distinct, formidable pillars of the Shadow Court.
Michael: As an Intel Operative and associate of Daemon, Michael’s true weapon is his mask of calm professionalism. He is a master of psychological torment, utilizing his strategic manipulation and intellectual power to exert psychological control. On Earth, he operates under the guise of Dr. Michael Yonny, a hospital psychologist specializing in trauma—a chillingly perfect cover for a man who is a master of the mind. His key item, the Obsidian Compass, is said to point toward sources of pure magic in the shadowed realm.
Warren: Warren operates under "Grim Duty," characterized by his stoic, unmoving nature and absolute loyalty to the Nocturni monarchy. Unlike Michael’s psychological finesse, Warren wields dangerous, coercive "Susurri Cold" magic designed for breaking wills, as well as the ability to read the memories of objects and places. He is a man of unwavering resolve, yet he is clearly harboring an internal conflict, often evidenced by fleeting glimpses of regret.
The Weight of Secrets
While their public roles as enforcers for the Crown are well-known to those in high society, their true history—and the full extent of their loyalty—is far more complicated.
Writing these two has been a fascinating challenge. Michael’s calculating, polite nature makes him a difficult person to read, even for me. Warren, while seemingly more straightforward in his martial discipline, carries a silent intensity that suggests he knows far more about the undercurrents of the Shadow Accord than he will ever admit aloud.
I’ve been asked before about their connection to Liz and the circumstances surrounding her journey. While I can’t reveal everything, I will say this: the roles Michael and Warren have played are deeper than they seem. There are secrets buried in their pasts—and in their specific service to the Royal Family—that have yet to be fully brought into the light. When the time comes for those truths to surface, it will change everything we think we know about the protectors and the players in this saga.
A Question for You
Michael and Warren have very different ways of getting things done. If you were a member of the Shadow Court, would you fear the psychological torment of Michael, or the coercive, will-breaking cold of Warren more?
Let’s talk theories in the comments!
