Today I’m turning our attention to the creatures that inhabit the edges of our story: the Shade Puffs (Mus Umbralis Familiaris).  More Than Just a Pet

While many travelers in Lunaria might first be drawn to their appearance—small, mouse-like critters that are undeniably cute—those who know the lore understand that Shade Puffs are much more than just companions. 

As you can see from their official creature profile, they are defined by three words: Umbral. Stealthy. Tranquil. Keeping a Shade Puff is a commitment, and for many, it’s a vital partnership. 

Why They Are So Special

Their abilities make them uniquely suited for life in Lunaria. These little creatures have a natural affinity for sensing magical disturbances and navigating the hidden paths of our world. 

Intuitive Guardians: Because they are so sensitive, a Shade Puff will often alert its owner to approaching danger long before it’s visible.  

The Bond: The bond between a human and a Shade Puff is profound. It’s not just about ownership; it’s about a mutual reliance. They are often kept as pets, but they serve as silent sentinels for the people they trust.  

Writing the Puffs

In my writing, I love the moments where the Puffs get to shine. Whether they are scurrying through the shadows or providing a moment of comfort to a character who has been through too much, they add a layer of warmth to the dark, dangerous world of The Night Chronicles. Integrating them into the story feels like giving the characters a piece of home to carry with them, even when the world feels like it’s falling apart.
